Absence in high school
The main rule is that all absences must be recorded.
If a student has more than 10 percent undocumented absences in a subject, they will generally not be entitled to a mid-term assessment with a grade or a point grade in the subject, and the teacher cannot assign such grades.
Students must keep a close eye on their absences. It is also important to remember that all absences - both documented and undocumented absences - will appear on their diploma.
· To have an absence exempted from the absence limit, the absence must be due to one of the reasons set out in the regulations, Section 9-53, and the student must submit relevant documentation.
· If the student has between 10 and 15 percent undocumented absences and the reason for the absence makes it clearly unreasonable for the student not to be able to receive a grade, the principal may decide that he or she will still receive a grade.
· The absence limit applies to class absences in individual subjects, not the students' total absences.
· The student shall receive a notification if he or she is in danger of not receiving a grade due to absence.
All absences from education, regardless of reason, should initially be counted when assessing whether the student is within or has exceeded the absence limit.
Absences not covered by the absence limit
If the student is absent from education due to a right they have under the Education Act, the absence shall not be counted towards the absence limit. Such absence may, for example, be:
· school counseling
· assessment carried out by the PP service and Statped organised study work that has been agreed with the subject teacher in advance
· student council work, school administrative work and participation in student councils under the auspices of the Student Organization, etc. that are approved by the school
· arranged conversation with the principal or other staff
· interview for an apprenticeship
· special, new and postponed exam
Absences that can be exempted from the absence limit
Absences due to the following reasons can be documented and exempted from the absence limit (cf. regulations section 9-53 fourth paragraph letters a to g):
· illness or other health conditions
· welfare conditions
· work as a shop steward
· political work
· relief work
· statutory attendance
· representation at events at national and international level
As a student at Metis High School, you are expected to notify your subject teacher on the day you are absent. If the student is under 18 years of age, guardians can also report absence. This is done by sending a message to the subject teacher/mentor on Itslearning (NB: notification from guardians is not considered documented absence).
If the student is prevented from coming to school, it is important that you obtain documentation of the absence: Documentation can be a statement from a doctor, psychologist, physiotherapist, dentist, etc. The documentation is uploaded together with the self-report on Visma In School (VIS).
