Everything you need to know about starting school
At Metis High School, you will meet skilled and committed teachers who are committed to your learning, while also making high demands on you in terms of effort, active participation and involvement.
As a student at Metis High School, you will experience a different school day. You will generally only have one subject per day, so-called block days. This gives you time and peace to immerse yourself in the subject. Block days also make it possible to move parts of the teaching out of the classroom. We are good at making use of all that Bergen city has to offer, including theater, cinema, museum and local businesses.
Welcome to us at Metis - we look forward to getting to know you!
Best regards

What happens in the first weeks of school?
The first day of school is August 15th. Then you will meet your class, and the mentor (contact teacher) will welcome you in the classroom. We will use the first two days of school (August 15th and 16th) to get to know each other, pick up books and bags, have lunch together and do various activities. You will have plenty of time to get to know the students in your class.
Monday, August 19th is the first regular day of classes. This week, all Vg1 classes will go on a get-acquainted trip. This can be an overnight trip or an extended day trip (returning home in the afternoon). Information about when and where the trip will take place will be provided on the first day of school.
Preparatory course in math for Vg1 and additional course for general university entrance qualifications:
Everyone who is going to start Vg1 and Påbygg for general university entrance qualification is offered a free introductory course in math. We recommend everyone to sign up. This will include a general review of math from middle school and a calculation of math problems. The course provides a good starting point for success with math in upper secondary school and is taught by our employed math teachers.
We serve lunch on course days.

Frequently asked questions about Metis

Block days mean that you have one subject per day. The school day generally lasts from 8:30-15:30. Math, foreign language and physical education are half days. The school has block days in most subjects. This gives you time and peace to immerse yourself in the subject.
Block days also make it possible to move parts of the teaching out of the classroom. We are good at taking advantage of all that Bergen city has to offer, such as theater, cinema, museum and the like.

The school route for the 2024 – 2025 school year can be found here .
You can find your schedule far in advance in Visma In School and from week to week in Its learning, with detailed and planned teaching sessions for each day.
-
Students starting at Metis High School will receive their own Mac. You will receive an SMS on August 9th with a link to where you can order your Mac. Your Mac will be delivered within 1 week.
New students in Vg2 and Vg3 are given a Mac at school at the start of school.

Metis High School uses Its learning as its learning platform. This is where teaching is planned, all communication between teacher and student takes place. On Its learning you will find updated calendar information for each week.
In addition, the school uses Visma in school (VIS). Absences are recorded here, and this is where you as a student can apply for accommodations, exemptions, etc.
You will be given login information for both locations on the first day of school.
-
You can read more about Visma InSchool and watch an introductory video on this page.
-
If you need accommodations, we as a school want to have information as soon as possible. For example, in connection with reading and writing difficulties or chronic/long-term illness.
There is no information transfer between middle schools and upper secondary schools. You must therefore provide us with good information, with subsequent documentation, so that we at Metis can provide good facilities for you as a student.
You can contact your mentor or our social advisor Geir Oskar Silseth (Gosken). His contact information is: geir.oskar.silseth@metis.no (NB do not send sensitive information by email)
-
Metis High School has its own IT department. Simen works here, and he has an office on the 1st floor (by entrance A). Simen can help with most things related to Mac, printing and various technical equipment.
If you have questions about logging in to Its learning, Visma In School or Wifi, your mentor can help with this.

For Vg1 students, absence and the absence limit are something new. As a student, you can have up to 10% undocumented absences in a subject per school year. If you have more than 10% undocumented absences, the school is not allowed to give a passing grade in the subject. It is therefore important that you as a student closely monitor your absences. It is also important to remember that all absences - both documented and undocumented absences - appear on the diploma.
If the student has between 10 and 15 percent undocumented absences and the reason for the absence makes it clearly unreasonable for the student not to be able to receive a grade, the principal may decide that he or she will still receive a grade.
If you are prevented from coming to school for a day, it is important that you obtain documentation of the absence: Documentation can be a statement from a doctor, psychologist, physiotherapist, dentist, etc.
As a student at Metis High School, you are expected to notify your subject teacher on the day you are absent. This is done by sending a message to your subject teacher/mentor at Its Learning. If you are under 18 years of age, parents can also report your absence (NB: notification from a guardian is not considered documented absence).
-
From the first day of school, you will have your own mentor who will follow you closely throughout the school year. Each class has two mentors and the students in the class are divided between these two mentors. The mentor will follow you up with performance reviews, help you with applications, inform you about rights, obligations and opportunities. In addition, the mentor is a good conversation partner and can help you with a lot and a little throughout the school year.
-
At Lånekassen you can get an equipment grant ( https://lanekassen.no/nb-NO/stipend-og-lan/norge/videregaende-skole/ ). The entire equipment grant will be paid when your application has been processed and the school has notified Lånekassen that you have arrived at the start of school. Our career counselor Emilie will be happy to help you if you have any questions about Lånekassen and grants. She can be reached by email at emilie@metis.no .
